National Party leader Simon Bridges thought the Green's attack ad mocking his accent was "kinda funny" but showed they and the government were under pressure, he said.
The Greens' own supporters demanded the video be pulled down forcing the party into a swift apology and backdown.
The ad was an attempt to counter National's criticism of the government's plans to offer a discount for new electric vehicles.
"We were trying to use satire to make a point about National's use of attack ads," Greens' leader James Shaw. "It didn't go well, so we've pulled the ad.""I kinda liked it," Mr Bridges told Morning Report. "Clearly their membership, their base, didn't."
"We were holding the government to account, and the Green Party to account, on their taxes.
"Where they've gone wrong is they're holding me to account on my accent.
"Look, I don't mind, but some do.
"Politics is rough and tumble, people do things, I'm not going to judge them."
It raised the issue of the place of so-called attack ads, he said.
