MORE THAN A RESCUE. When ADI goes in and gets the animals our work does not stop there. It may not be as headline grabbing but the work we do once the animals are saved is just as important and literally a life’s work – giving the individuals who have suffered so much their lives back, and providing the ongoing treatment and care they need. Our first job is to bring these traumatised and abused animals back to better health – providing better food and enrichment, supplementing their diet with vitamins and minerals, bringing in veterinary experts such as the renowned Dr Peter Emily of PEIVDF to carry out dental and other specialist surgery and more. During this time we also get to work building the habitats they will call home, in their natural environments wherever possible. Relocating the animals to their forever homes, we continue to fund their ongoing care including veterinary treatment. Most of the circus lions ADI rescued in Peru have required repeated dental surgeries to repair the damage done and also need routine health checks and vaccinations, as well as ongoing medication. This support, for most of our animals, is for life.
